Dance With Me $4.29 It’s not exactly Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, but this 1998 entry, starring Vanessa Williams and newcomer Chayanne offers its own terpsichorean pleasures. There, he falls for Ruby Sinclair (Vanessa Williams), a one-time ballroom… |

Salsa $8.49 Disco-gone-Latin, that’s what’s happening in Salsa, where a grease monkey who’s sick and tired of knuckle-busting lives for his nights on the dance floor where he gyrates to the salsa beat. Womens Salsa Dancer Costume $44.95 The Women’s Salsa Dancer Costume harkens back to a more glorious era of film. Back when stars were stars and they had things like big, crazy musicals without an of that CGI nonsense. Glamorous, that’s what they were. And naturally, a huge part of that were svelt women dancing around like dervishes with cornucopias on their head. I won’t say it was a simpler time, but they certainly had a taste for pageantry that we just take for granted nowadays.Whether you just like dancing or you’re a Carmen Miranda completionist, this colorful number is right up your alley. Everyone likes a Latin bombshell! Live the la vida loca with a ruffled top, skirt, and hot shorts (could this costume have any other kind of shorts? Impossible!). You don’t even need to be able to tango, samba, or salsa dance, the dress does most of the work for you. A strong breeze could probably do the work for you! Match the Women’s Salsa Dancer Costume with a pair of maracas and there’s no telling where you could go. |

Salsa Brothers $11.98 2011 collection from the Latin music legends. In Salsa and Latin jazz, two brothers stand tall as the giants of the piano: Charlie and Eddie Palmieri. From the late 1940s to the present day, the brothers have been a dominant force in Latin music and Salsa Brothers showcases their most sought after recordings from their time at Coco Records (the legendary New York label run by Latin Soul producer Harvey Aherne) plus recordings for Atlantic, Seeco, Columbia and Tropical Budda – many of which are now out of print. During their careers the brothers were at the forefront of new styles of Latin music – Charlie with Charanga in the late 1950s, Eddie with the new Latin Jazz sound in the early 1960s. By the 1970s, they were both stars of the new Salsa music. Both excelled at playing Salsa, becoming the genres preeminent piano legends, but they were also renowned for their heavier, experimental efforts in Latin Jazz, Boogaloo and Latin Funk. Nascente. |

Cafe Latin $15.98 2009 three CD collection. Many American music lovers think of Latin music as Salsa, which is a New York invention from the ’60s and, although very popular, is only a very minor part of the whole picture. A Brazilian will think of Latin music as Brazilian music (which is sung in Portuguese, not Spanish, unlike all other Latin music). And an Argentine will define Latin in relation to Tango, Argentina’s unique contribution to the story. This triple disc set tries to give the listener a flavor of all of the above: a Brazilian night, a Cuban night, and an anything-goes, Saturday dance night. 44 tracks. Metro Music. |

Tango Magnetism $13.58 The artwork for this release leads the listener to expect a tango album of some sort, which this set of contemporary compositions for alto saxophone and piano or electronic accompaniment mostly is not. The only actual tango on hand is Astor Piazzolla’s gloriously elegiac Adiós Nonino, in an arrangement by saxophonist Todd Oxford, and indeed it does work beautifully on the saxophone, which has the same combination of passion and grit as Piazzolla’s bandoneón. Instead, Oxford offers something rarer than a tango album: a program that circles loosely around the ideas of the tango, dance, Latin America, nightlife, and the meeting of classical and vernacular traditions. The opening Tango Magnetism of Daniel Gutwein hints of the tango as “a metaphor for other male-female relationships in which passions are contained not only by the conventions and formal restraints of society, but by their own fears of chaos,” put it that way and the music’s rather abstract patterns make sense. John Williams’ Catch Me If You Can comes from the film of the same name. The prolific David Amram combines a jazz-tinged ballad with a piece influenced by the Taxim genre of Arabic music, while Aaron I. Bramwell’s Canciones del Zócalo (Songs of the Plaza) nicely evokes a Latin American town with very few gestures. David Heuser’s electronic Deep Blue Spiral is consistent in mood with the rest of the music, but nonetheless seems to break the thread of consistently related music. Nonetheless, this is a model contemporary instrumental recital, one that directly appeals to an audience and finds a secure place for concert music within its everyday surroundings without recourse to sentimentality or familiarity. ~ James Manheim, Rovi Performers: Daniel Immel – Piano; Todd Oxford – Saxophone |

Rough Guide to Salsa Gold $11.98 The 1970s were the golden age for salsa, the New York-based style that brought together Latin music and made it cool. This compilation harks back to that time, with big names like Machito and Fruko (whose “Fruko a Lo Compadre” smokes). If it just did that, it would make a fine primer, but by digging a little deeper, this disc offers a fuller picture of salsa — a style that remains perennially popular. So, alongside a Louie Ramirez there’s Orquesta Dee Jay, whose “Dona Paula” shows that they should have been much better known. Overall, it’s the kind of record that could convert unbelievers to the salsa cause, with all tracks the crème de la crème, firing on all cylinders and that percolating salsa groove, and with some sparkling brass work. It captures a time when salsa was still fresh, the bands often wildly inventive and willing to try new things. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi |

Putumayo Presents: Salsa $11.98 Putumayo World Music has come out with some intriguing salsa/Afro-Cuban compilations over the years. Their 2003 release, Salsa Around the World, for example, took a look at salsa and salsa-influenced artists from non-Hispanic countries and included artists from such unlikely places as Scotland, Japan, and Finland. Putumayo Presents: Salsa, however, focuses primarily (though not exclusively) on salseros latinos , and Putumayo reminds listeners that not all Latinos who perform salsa are of Cuban or Puerto Rican descent. Of course, Cubans and Puerto Ricans are the groups who are the most closely identified with salsa, which started in pre-Castro Cuba and became extremely popular among Puerto Ricans. The vast majority of well-known salseros have been either Cubans based in Cuba or Florida, or Puerto Ricans based in Puerto Rico or New York City and its surrounding areas. So quite appropriately, Salsa spotlights skillful Puerto Ricans (Son Boricua on “Muñeca,” the iconic Eddie Palmieri on “Sujétate la Lengua”) as well as the long-running Cuban charanga band Orquesta Aragón (who team up with Puerto Rican salsa star Cheo Feliciano on “Son al Son”). But there are also selections by salseros from Colombia (Juanito y la Agresiva’s “Angoa,” Grupo Galé’s “Volver, Volver,” Fruko y Sus Tesos’ “Nací en la Barriada”), and adding to the variety are two very different artists who have been based in Los Angeles: Poncho Sanchez and Ricardo Lemvo. Sanchez, a Mexican-American with a very Cuban-influenced approach, is best known for instrumental Latin jazz but usually includes one or two vocal-oriented salsa tracks on his albums — and the lively “El Shing-a-Ling” is an example of Sanchez performing salsa. Lemvo, meanwhile, doesn’t come from a Hispanic background; he grew up in the Congo, and “Ay, Valeria” is salsa that incorporates soukous (a form of African pop). One can’t help but wish that this 47-minute CD were 25 or 30 minutes longer; even so, this is yet another rewarding salsa/Afro-Cuban compilation from Putumayo. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi |

Salsa Mundo Colombia $14.38 Import-only release, an installment in the Salsa Mundo series that looks at the development of Salsa around the world. Our first destination is Colombia, with its incredibly vibrant scene dominated by the legendary Discos Fuentes label. Over its 18 tracks the development of Colombian Salsa is plotted: from its roots in the 1960s when the country was in a relative state of calm, through to the 1970s when the country became engulfed in armed struggle funded by the rising tide of cocaine smuggling. The music reflected the everyday challenges of life but also acted as a form of escape. All the major acts are covered – from Joe Arroyo, with his classic ‘Rebellion’, Fruko and the Latin Brothers. We also include less well-known sounds from Lisandro Messa and Combo Los Yogas. The whole disc closes on the incendiary Afro-Latin Funk of ‘Shakalaode’ from 1976 – a UK club classic since the mid 80s. BGP. |

The Rough Guide to Salsa Clandestina $11.98 It’s interesting but perhaps not too surprising that there’s some overlap between this and Rough Guide to Latino Nuevo. Jose Conde, Cuban Cowboys, Ozomatli and Spam Allstars are on both discs, but then the concept isn’t too different, although this purports to be “the raw and contemporary sounds that is firing up the dancers in the back street bars and clubs of New York and throughout the Latin world.” Certainly, some of it has an edge, like Rob Swift’s “Salsa Scratch,” which adds turntables to a descarga, or jam. Some of it doesn’t work, such as Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez’s cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil.” The original reveled in its dark atmosphere and had a groove that rolled (and used Latin percussion); this version has only the Latin percussion. Far more salsa it might be, but it’s not an improvement. The tracks here are the cutting edge of salsa, but in many cases there doesn’t seem to be a great deal to distinguish them from the mainstream. You do find a few exceptions. The remix of “Wolfie’s Corner” has plenty of bounce, and the Cuban Cowboys please as always, while Radio Mundial inject a heavy dose of funk into the proceedings. It’s a good roundup of what’s happening in salsa, especially among the younger players, and in that it satisfies. It simply doesn’t feel like it’s out on the edge. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi |

Think Global: Salsa $11.98 It’s hard not to love salsa — after all, it’s the perfect party music — and this album has 14 excellent slabs of it, with the proceeds going to a good cause, Amnesty International. There’s no attempt to be cutting edge, simply to present some of the best contemporary artists in the genre, whether it’s African-born Ricardo Lemvo, Colombia’s Grupo Caneo or New York’s Spanish Harlem Orchestra. It’s fitting that the last is there, since New York was the cradle of salsa; it’s very much a big city style, even if it grew from a melange of Latin styles. But, since it’s been around well over 30 years, there’s no denying its power and endurance. So you get the powerhouse horns on most of the cuts, although Grupo Latin Vibe on “All That Vibe,” where the cool sound of the vibraphone takes the lead, comes like a breath of fresh air in the middle of the disc after so many relentless, full-tilt tracks. Singer Adriana Santana, from Colombia by way of London, shows British musicians can swing with the best of them, and on “El Loco,” La Excelencia return to a vintage salsa sound. This isn’t meant as an academic introduction to salsa, simply an album to enjoy, and in that it succeeds wonderfully. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi |

USED: Amar de Nuevo $7.98 When Amar de Nuevo was recorded in Santiago, Chile, in 1998, Inti-Illimani had been together for 31 years. But the Chilean band was showing no signs of losing its freshness. After all those years, Inti-Illimani was still taking chances and continued to experiment with a variety of Latin styles. The music of South American Indians — Chilean and Peruvian as well as Bolivian — was still Inti-Illimani’s foundation, and the band was still uniting that foundation with styles from all over Latin America. On this CD, South American music is successfully fused with everything from Afro-Cuban salsa (“Negra Presuntuosa,” “La Fiesta Eres Tu”) to Mexican ranchero (“Corrido de la Soberbia”). On the instrumental “Entre Amor,” the Chileans combine Andean music with elements of tango. Those who have admired the band’s previous releases will find Amar de Nuevo to be equally rewarding. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi |
